History

Originally built as a Union Church in 1904, the cornerstone was laid by Swart Dirk Uys, Voortrekker and founder of the town. This later became the Apostolic Church under Pieter le Roux, was purchased by the Hervormde Kerk in 1942, and then a Roman Catholic Church in 1997 when the property was  sold to the Diocese of Dundee.

Its 1st Priest, Fr. Ivano Bertolini lived in Wakkerstroom and died here in 2001. St Joseph’s is now served by the Priest from Volksrust Catholic Parish.

The stained-glass window behind the altar at St Joseph’s is of special interest. Beautifully crafted by Claire Honey, financed mainly by the townsfolk, it is affectionately known as “The Birders Window”. It depicts the beauty of Creation as we continue to experience it here in Wakkerstroom.

The annual “Wakkerstroom Community Christmas Celebration” has been held at St Joseph’s annually since 2001.
