Now a popular Tourism destination in Mpumalanga.  The area was first inhabited by the SAN people around 1500 and experienced the first white settlements in 1853 with the town being established in 1859. Part of the history of the town may be seen in its Historical cemetery which today covers graves from the first settlers and founders of the town to modern day residents as well as the graves of British soldiers killed in action  in the area during the First and Second Boer wars.

The area offers a climate of warm temperate summers to cold and freezing winters.  Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities on an individual or group basis.

Birding, for which we are world famous in Wakkerstroom, offers all interested Birders the opportunity to search for some of the vast number of common species in the area to the vulnerable and endangered species such as Rudd’s and Botha’s Larks, White Winged Flufftail , Blue and Wattled Cranes and the Bald Ibis.

Other activities include Fishing, Hiking/Walking Trails, Historical Walks and Tours, Off Road Biking and Cycling, Scenic drives , an annual Music Festival and much more.  Together with all this, Wakkerstroom offers any visitor a choice of both eating and accommodation venues to suit ones pocket and where one can enjoy the different offerings of all.
