Cemetery

Steeped in History, a must visit!

Apart from the historical significance and beauty of the cemetery, of special interest is the tablet between the graves which records that Swart Dirk Uys used a “riem” cut from the hide of an eland to survey the town.

In the same section is a granite memorial to 18 British soldiers killed in action during the Transvaal War of Independence in 1880/1881, which followed the British Annexation of 1877.

In the upper block is the granite stele commemorating British and Imperial soldiers killed in action during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. This memorial, together with the one in this historic section, is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
